In keeping with the program's mission of service to underserved populations,
the curriculum encompasses full spectrum family medicine. Core curriculum
instruction provided during block rotations includes: ambulatory family
medicine, cardiology/CCU, community medicine/research, emergency medicine,
family medicine inpatient service, gynecology, occupational medicine,
ophthalmology, otolaryngology, orthopedics/sports medicine, pediatrics
(ambulatory, ER, wards), psychosocial medicine, pulmonary/ICU, rural
medicine, surgery, and urology. Four elective rotations are scheduled
during the third year of training.
Longitudinal Experiences
Longitudinal experiences spanning all three years provide training in dermatology, geriatrics, practice management, obstetrics, procedures, behavioral health, radiology, and travel medicine. Didactic presentations cover all curricular areas.
Obstetrics Training
CWFM-R provides a solid foundation in obstetrics. Residents spend two
months during the first and second years of training on the busy OB
floor at
Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital (Memorial), a regional perinatal
center. Additionally, residents may choose up to three months of elective
OB experience.
Exposure to high-risk births is an important part of our longitudinal
training. Perinatalogists from the University of Washington School
of Medicine lecture and conduct high-risk clinics in Yakima twice
monthly. CWFM-R residents work with the perinatalogists during
these clinics and gain experience with a variety of complex cases.
CWFM-R also provides OB ultrasound, neonatal resuscitation (NRP), and
advanced life support in obstetrics (ALSO) training.
Family Medicine Service
The Family Medicine Service (FMS) operates year-round at Yakima Valley
Memorial Hospital (Memorial) and Yakima
Regional Medical and Cardiac Center (Regional). The FMS is responsible
for the care of patients from the CWFM clinical practice and for patients
admitted through the medical back-up system.
The FMS on-call resident, in collaboration with the CWFM call service
and the FMS attendings, triage care for our patients when the Family
Medicine Center is closed. This includes response to calls from patients
and other patient care providers, i.e., laboratories, consultants,
nursing homes, etc.
Away Required Rotation
The Rural Medicine rotation, scheduled during the R-2 year, provides residents with an introduction to the practice and lifestyle of family physicians in rural areas. Housing is provided for the resident during this rotation.
Elective Rotations
A total of three elective rotations are scheduled during the R-3 year.
A variety of elective experiences are available with community specialists
who practice state-of-the-art medicine.
One elective may be taken as an away elective. The residency does not pay for
away electives, but residents may use Professional Development funds
to offset approved away rotation expenses.
