Russell
Maier, MD - Program Director
Russell is a graduate of the University of Washington School
of Medicine and family medicine residency where he served as Chief
Resident. He chose family medicine because it offers the opportunity
for a close relationship with patients. He completed the University
of Washington Faculty Development Fellowship in Family Medicine,
and is board certified. For many years, Russell served as site coordinator
for the University of Washington required third year clerkship in
family medicine and the elective fourth-year sub-internship. His
residency administration experience includes two years as Associate
Program Director prior to assuming the position of Program Director
in 2005. Russell is very active in community health initiatives.
He chaired the successful city-wide fluoridation campaign and currently
serves on the board of the Washington Dental Service Foundation. Russell
and his wife, also a physician, have three kids, two dogs and a
hedgehog. The family enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, backpacking,
camping, biking, and snow skiing. Being a parent is far and away
what Russell enjoys most.

Vicki
Black, MD - Family Medicine Faculty
A board certified graduate of Loyola School of Medicine and the
Family Practice Residency in Oak Park, Illinois, Vicki practiced
for fourteen years in rural Washington with medically underserved
populations. She is skilled in the practice of obstetrics and special
procedures, and is a national advisory faculty for Advanced Life
Support in Obstetrics (ALSO). Vicki completed the Family Medicine
Faculty Development Fellowship at the University of Washington with
research on Women in Rural Medicine. She is past president of the
Washington Rural Health Association and the Washington Academy of
Family Physicians. Vicki served as Associate Director of CWFM's
residency program from 1992-2003 and Director from 2003-2005. She
is the Medical Director for CWFM.

Roger
Bracchi, MD - Family Medicine Faculty
Originally from Portland, Oregon, Roger is a board certified graduate
of Oregon Health Sciences University and the prior family medicine
residency program in Yakima. He was in private practice in Yakima
for 13 years before joining the CWFM faculty. He was formerly chair
of the Department of Family Medicine for the conjoint medical staff.
Roger enjoys teaching family medicine and coordinating the travel
medicine clinic. He delights in the changing schedule and variety
of faculty responsibilities at CWFM, and finds being Hospital Doc
for the Family Medicine Service especially fun. Roger and his wife
have two grown children and reside on a 14-acre ranch. When not
working, Roger enjoys his family, snow skiing, hiking and riding
his horses.

Tanny
Davenport, MD - Family Medicine
Faculty
Lower Yakima Valley native, Tanny always knew he’d be a doctor.
He earned a Bachelors degree at Whitman College prior to entering
medical school at the University of Washington. Tanny completed
two medical school rotations and residency at Central Washington
Family Medicine, and is board-certified. He loves working with the
CWFM staff "because everyone works hard to provide the best
possible care for patients—and has fun while doing it!"
As a family medicine physician, Tanny enjoys taking care of all
generations of a family unit. He has a deep appreciation for the
cultural diversity of the Yakima Valley as he is of mixed Caucasian-Filipino
heritage. When not spending time with his wife, a first grade teacher,
or his large extended family, Tanny has fun playing basketball,
golf, and working out. Tanny is site co-coordinator for the UW Family
Medicine Clerkship, oversees the residency ENT/Ophthalmology curriculum
and the Wednesday didactic series.

Mark
Deramo, MD - Family Medicine Faculty
Originally from Youngstown, Ohio, Mark received his medical degree
from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He completed his
family medicine residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical
Center Shadyside Family Medicine Residency Program, and in June
2004 completed a fellowship in Faculty Development at UPMC McKeesport.
Mark has a special interest in evidence-based holistic medicine.
He has two cats (Guinness and Snickers) and likes to wear purple.
He collects salt-water fish and corals. He’s competed in two
Marine Corps marathons, reads science-fiction/fantasy, and is an
amateur cook, not because he loves to cook but because he loves
to eat. Mark is especially fond of desserts and writes the popular
restaurant review for CWFM’s monthly employee newsletter.

Debra
Gould, MD, MPH -
Family Medicine Faculty
Originally from rural Canaseraga, New York, Deb received her medical
degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She completed
her residency in family medicine at Highland Hospital University,
Rochester, New York. She went on to receive a Masters degree in
public health and completed a 2-year fellowship in health services
research at the University of Washington, Seattle. Deb chose family
medicine because she enjoys the process and complexity of working
holistically with patients within the context of their families
and community. She proclaims that CWFM is one of the best organizations
in which she’s worked; the staff, faculty and residents genuinely
care about each other and their patients. Deb coordinates the Ambulatory
Family Medicine and Community Medicine rotations. Aside from CWFM,
Deb and her husband, a developer of mental health and chemical dependency
programs for Yakima County Department of Corrections, travel throughout
the western United States white water kayaking. Deb also enjoys
music, reading and studies classical guitar and Tibetan Buddhism.

Portia
Jones, MD, MPH -
Family Medicine Faculty
Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, Portia completed a Bachelor
of Arts degree in Spanish from George Fox College in Newberg, Oregon.
She attended Hahnamann University School of Medicine for two years
before transferring to the University of Minnesota School of Medicine,
where she received her medical degree. She simultaneously completed
her residency in family medicine and a fellowship in obstetrics
at Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Portia formerly
held faculty positions in Maryland, Minnesota and New York. She
completed a Masters of Public Health degree at Johns Hopkins School
of Hygiene and Public Health and is a certified instructor for Advanced
Life Support in Obstetrics and the Neonatal Resuscitation Program.
Portia and her husband work with the Religious Society of Friends
(Quakers) in Honduras to train primary health care workers and develop
a health network in an area that provides little health resources.
They teach three courses during the 4-6 weeks they spend in Central
America each year. Portia and her husband have three children ages
12, 10 and 7.

Mike
Maples, MD – Family Medicine Faculty
Mike enjoys the full scope of family medicine, caring for families
throughout their life cycle. He is committed to patient education,
to help patients understand their wellness needs, and to make informed
decisions regarding their illness care. He is a graduate of the
University of Washington School of Medicine. He did his family medicine
residency at University Hospital in Seattle, completing that training
in 1983. After graduation, Mike moved to Yakima, where he practiced
for six years. In 1989, he returned to Seattle to assume a faculty
position at the Group Health Residency Program and completed the
UW Family Medicine Faculty Development Fellowship, learning the
skills needed to teach physicians in the specialty of family medicine.
In 1992, he returned to Yakima to become the founding director of
the CWFM residency program. Dr. Maples was named Chief Executive
Officer (CEO) of CWFM in 2003. Mike and his wife, also a physician,
have two teenage sons. His interests outside of work and family
include gardening, cooking, snowboarding, whitewater rafting and
hiking. He also enjoys watching and listening to jazz and other
performances in which his sons are involved.

Jacobo
Rivero, MD -
Family Medicine Faculty
Originally from Mexico, Jacobo received his medical degree from
the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana in Mexico City and completed
his residency at Family Medicine of Spokane. Following residency,
Jacobo moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico, where he worked as a family
medicine physician, an emergency room physician, and the Chief of
Medical Staff. He is especially interested in geriatric medicine,
genetics, medical ethics and hospice/palliative care. Jacobo and
his wife have eight children. Favorite family activities include
hiking, fishing, snow-skiing, and anything outdoors. Although the
pony-tail is gone, Jacobo enjoys Yakima weather for cruising on
his Harley.

Kirk Strosahl , PhD -
Behavioral Scientist
Kirk is a clinical psychologist specializing in health psychology, medical psychology and integrative behavioral care. He earned a B.S. in Psychology from Colorado University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Purdue University. Kirk is a published author, presenter, reseacher, and clinician with extensive experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Prior to joining the residency faculty, he was the principal, reseacher, and training director for Mountainview Consulting Group which provided consulting services, technical assistance, and direct clinical training in integrative medicine strategies and primary care behavioral health programs to primary care providers and health systems. Kirk and his wife, also a psychologist, are the proud parents of three grown daughters. their passions include gardening, travel and outdoor adventure. Kirk is particularly attracted to fishing and golf, both of which test his frustration tolerance.He and his wife own and operate a wine grape vineyard.

Marvin
Scotvold, MD – Dermatology Faculty
Scotty is a Clinical Professor of Medicine (dermatology), and pediatrics
at the University of Washington School of Medicine, and the Executive
Director of the North Pacific Pediatric Society. He completed residencies
in dermatology and pediatrics and did a fellowship in pediatric
endocrinology prior to a long tenure in academic medicine. Scotty
especially enjoys teaching family medicine residents at CWFM, because
the commitment of the faculty is superb and the well qualified residents
are eager to learn. Scotty and his wife have three daughters, a
son, and nine grandchildren. When not teaching, he loves to visit
family and friends, travel with his wife, participate in church
activities, and tend to 3 horses.

Mark
Bauer, MD – Internal Medicine Faculty
Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Mark received a degree in medicine
from Wayne State University and completed his internal medicine
residency at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis.
He has been in private practice for 20 years and provides in-hospital
attending services for the CWFM family medicine service. Mark enjoys
the one-on-one interaction with his long-standing patients, as well
as getting to know new patients in the small rural community where
he practices. Married with 3 teenagers, Mark actively supports his
children’s extracurricular activities and takes pleasure in
home improvement projects, hiking, snow skiing, and camping.

Melissa
Lemp, DO –
Pediatrics Faculty
Melissa came to CWFM with five years experience as an attending
physician in inner city St. Louis, working with the National Health
Corps. Working with a poor and medically underserved population
has always been a focus in her pursuit to practice pediatric and
adolescent medicine. That commitment continues as Melissa dedicates
herself to the current medical needs of the many cultures in the
Yakima Valley. She is a volunteer medical advisor for Children’s
Village and Carroll Children's Center. Melissa and her husband,
a local radiologist, have three children. Actively involved in community
sports, she loves playing in the nearby mountains with her family.

Stephen
Pearson, MD – Pediatrics Faculty
Originally from the east coast, Stephen has lived in the Yakima
Valley since 1989. He has provided pediatric care to low-income
and minority populations in community health centers and medically
underserved communities and enjoys teaching and research applicable
to ambulatory practice settings. He feels that family medicine physicians
and pediatricians can be involved in research to further evidence
based knowledge and improve the overall health of adults and children.
He is currently chair of the national steering committee for Pediatric
Research in Office Settings (PROS). Outside of work, Stephen enjoys
spending his free time with his wife and two sons. When asked how
he feels about his position as a teaching faculty member, he replied,
“It is a privilege and a pleasure to contribute to the training
of physicians who share my interest in caring for communities in
underserved areas.”

Louise
Achey, PharmD – Pharmacology Faculty
Louise loves to teach. She received her PharmD from Idaho State
University and has been a pharmacist for 26 years, 13 of which were
spent in a hospital pharmacy and 12 at CWFM. Her interests lie in
pharmacokinetics and herbal products. She coordinates the pharmacology
curriculum and maintains an active teaching role with residents.
Louise is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacology with the
Washington State University College of Pharmacy and teaches in the
University of Washington MEDEX program. She and her husband, a fire
commissioner, live in a log home in the nearby mountains, where
they enjoy hiking. They have a grown daughter and Louise has 2 Scottish
terriers. A former EMT and firefighter, Louise plays the violin
and Irish harp. She loves living in the Yakima Valley because it’s
out of the traffic, out of the rain, and close to everything else.

April
Yates Hardy, MSOD – Director of Academic Affairs
April earned a Masters of Science in Organizational Development
from Central Washington University. Prior to joining the program
at its inception in 1992, she worked in both the profit and not-for-profit
sectors as a manager, teacher, and consultant. April manages many
aspects of the academic program including curriculum coordination,
resident recruitment and orientation, and the residency program’s
marketing and community relations. She co-coordinates the medical
student clerkships and sub-internships and teaches organizational
development theory and practice to residents. April values the opportunity
to work in an educational environment with great people, enjoys
the diversity of her responsibilities, and is committed to the mission
of the program. She has lived in Yakima for 29 years and appreciates
the spirit of community. She is an active volunteer and community
board member. Outside of work, April is a theatre mom. She and her
husband, a mental health therapist, follow their son's local theatrical
pursuits. April enjoys reading, movies, creative projects, travel,
quiet moments, and time spent with family and friends.

Paul
Kaschmitter, MBA - Chief Financial Officer
Paul moved to the Yakima Valley after graduating from the University
of Idaho with a Bachelors of Science degree in Business and Economics,
which included a double major in finance and management. He has worked
in a healthcare environment for most of his life from orderly duties
as a college student to Chief Financial Officer of a Providence Health
System Medical Center. Paul continued his education and earned a degree
in Accounting in 1984 and went on to complete a Masters of Business
Administration in 1995 with an emphasis in Health Administration.
Paul loves the Yakima Valley and the variety of activities it offers.
He serves on several boards, is a service club member, and is always
selling something for charity or a fund-raising event. Paul and his
wife keep busy with their son, a gifted musician, and their daughter,
an avid sports enthusiast who participates in soccer, basketball and
baseball. Paul’s other interests include classic movies, golfing,
skiing and skeet shooting. |
